12 May 2006 US interest rates increase to five-year peak The US Federal Reserve has raised interest rates for the 16th time in a row, to a five-year high of 5%. Analysts had widely expected the Federal Open Market Committee to raise rates from 4.75% at its second meeting and indications are that the Fed might still need to raise rates further, even though it may not do so at its next meeting in June.
