The Office of Statistics South Africa has reported that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has risen by 3.9% in the year to August, up from 3.4% in July 2005. The higher inflation levels are due to higher transport costs and the rate increases from non-alcoholic beverages.

The annual percentage change in CPIX which is the Consumer Price Index excluding interest rates on mortgage bonds recorded a 4.8% increase in August, up from 4.2% in July.
