22 August 2005 India to spend $9bn to improve infrastructure India will be lent $9bn in total by the World Bank over the next three years to improve the infrastructure of its rural areas. $3bn has been expected to fund the Indian government's "Bharat Nirman" project, which is aimed at improving rural infrastructure in six areas: irrigation, drinking water and sanitation, roads, access to electricity, telecommunications and housing.
